Jaguar XE SVR To Get V-8 Power: Report

Jaguar’s upcoming XE small sedan will be the first model to feature the automaker’s new Ingenium four-cylinder engines. However, Jaguar’s 3.0-liter V-6 is also expected to be offered and according to a new report there will be a V-8 option as well.

Yes, the XE is expected to feature a high-performance SVR variant built by the men and women at Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicles Operations (SVO), and Auto Express reports that this XE SVR model will feature Jaguar’s ubiquitous supercharged 5.0-liter V-8—with peak output tuned to about 489 horsepower. Some performance estimates are a 0-62 mph time of around 4.0 seconds and a top speed electronically limited to 155 mph.

By comparison, the latest M3 develops ‘only’ 425 hp from its turbocharged in-line six, and the upcoming Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG is expected to deliver around 455 hp from its turbocharged V-8. Another potential rival is the upcoming Cadillac ATS-V, which is expected to match the BMW in output. So, if the report proves accurate, the XE SVR could become the new performance king in the small sedan segment.

Power alone won’t be the car’s only hallmark, however. The XE SVR is said to feature the regular XE’s eight-speed automatic transmission as standard, but with faster shifts for improved performance. Wheels, brakes, suspension and stability/traction control would all be tuned for greater performance as well.

A reveal could take place in early 2016, which is about when the regular XE is scheduled to land in U.S. showrooms. The regular XE goes on sale in Europe early next year following a reveal on September 8.
