Meet The Largest Cruise Ship In San Diego. Diverted Because Of A Hurricane

Visitors to our home city’s port were treated to a towering surprise earlier this week when the largest cruise ship to ever slip into the Port of San Diego stopped by unexpectedly.

The Norwegian Bliss, among the ten largest cruise ships on the planet, was diverted to San Diego by hurricane Willa and tropical storm Vincente in the eastern Pacific. The ship was originally destined for the Mexican Riviera but rerouted to San Diego when the potential to run into bad weather necessitated a change. Port officials in San Diego claim a stop in our city by one of these ships can bring in over a half million dollars of revenue to the city. That seems implausible, but when you consider a ship of this size carries some 4,000 passengers, those numbers make a little more sense. Consider too that the ship’s staff and crew, which is comprised of nearly 2,000 employees, also likely disembark and visit the area and it seems much more realistic.

The ship, currently listed as the 9th largest cruise ship in operation, relies on five monstrous engines that crank out an unreal 102,900 horsepower, all of which are needed to push the 168,000-ton vessel at a brisk 22 knots. Guests stay in the twenty-two hundred staterooms, nearly all of which have ocean views. Nearly half of the staterooms have balconies, offering those guests their own personal connection with the ocean as the ship steams toward its destination.

It’s unclear as of now how long the ship will remain docked here, as Norwegian is monitoring the weather closely. Guests seemed perturbed by the disruption, but our San Diego family greeted them with open arms to help ease the annoyance. We all know there are plenty of great restaurants, shops and sightseeing destinations here in the area, so hopefully, the wayward guests won’t be too bothered by having to spend a few days with us.
