Mic’d Up with Antron Brown in the Staging Lanes
Three time NHRA Top Fuel world champion Antron Brown is one of the most likable, dynamic personalities in all of drag racing. Within seconds of meeting Antron, you’ll be struck by the fact that, when you’re speaking to him, he makes sure that you have his undivided attention, a trait often lost on pretty much everybody in the fast-paced, frenetic world of professional drag racing. We had the pleasure of meeting Antron at the US Nationals, one of the most prestigious, and ridiculously hectic, stops on the NHRA season tour. Despite all of the hoopla and being pulled in multiple directions at all times, Antron made us feel as if we were the only guys in the world who mattered, and that was not lost on us.
As a part of Team Speed Society Racing, Antron brings the most hardware to the table, having won the three aforementioned season titles as well as, at least as of this writing, 65 career wins, 49 in Top Fuel to go along with his 16 wins aboard a Pro Stock Motorcycle. The New Jersey native, who now resides just outside of Indianapolis, has built a legion of loyal fans who flock to his pits to watch their favorite driver in action. At every opportunity, Antron is at the back of his pit area, signing autographs and shaking hands with his fans, especially focusing on the younger generation, as he has kids of his own competing in the Junior Drag Racing League.
The driver of the Matco Tools/US Army/Toyota sponsored Top Fuel Dragster will be back in action in a few weeks when the 2018 campaign kicks off. The NHRA’s media department strapped a mic on Brown when the tour stopped in Chicago back in the summer to catch a few minutes of “Pure AB” in the staging lanes with his fellow drivers and their teams. There’s no shortage of laughs and grins, and Antron is even approached by a fellow driver for an autograph right there in the staging lanes. We’ll be catching up with Brown and his Match crew as soon as the season kicks off in Pomona.
