New Cannonball Record Set AGAIN – COVID Cannonball Sparks Controversy

Over the years, we have seen the cannonball record broken several times. The community surrounding the record has taken on a sort of “underground” facade.

This record remains to be one of the exciting mysteries of the car community. With the internet taking us inside of absolutely everything these days, the cannonball record has maintained relative secrecy over the years. For the most part, the ins and outs of a run are held by a small group. This group then decides, for the most part, when the information is released to the public.

With that in mind, this group also decides if there is any sort of foul play happening. Let’s just say that during this time of COVID-19, there have been discussions as to the legitimacy of new records.

Naturally, with everybody staying at home, there isn’t much traffic on the highways. Therefore, records that would come once every couple of years have since been falling left and right. Most recently, we have seen the coast-to-cost record fall 7 times in the last 5 weeks.

When we heard that the first COVID-19 Cannonball record came to life, it was definitely big news. In any case, that record wouldn’t stand very long, though.

By following along with the video below, Cannonball expert, Ed Bolian, gives us the state of the union of this prestigious record. It seems as if most, including those that set the time, are on the same page about the nature of these times set during quarantine. However, it has still managed to bring a little bit of controversy to the storied club of record holders.

What’s your take on the matter? if somebody sets a coast-to-coast driving record during quarantine, should it actually count? Should the time perhaps be placed in the record books with an asterisk next to it?
