NHRA Will be Back to Racing in July, Releases 19 Race Schedule

When it comes to the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re dealing with something that is rather unprecedented in modern times. Sure, there have been health pandemics in the past. We have also dealt with incredibly dangerous and contagious diseases. However, this particular situation seems to have its very own set of rules. Figuring out exactly what those rules should be for finding our way back to public gatherings is going to be a tricky process.

Getting Back to Racing

In the world of racing, it seems like steps are being taken to try and figure out just that, though. Because the roadmap is rather undefined, the process of trial and error will have to define the best practices for bringing back racing.

For those who have tuned into NASCAR, they have seen that the sport has managed to get off several races without a hitch over the past two weeks. That leads us to question when the NHRA would be coming back and when we can expect fans in attendance. As of today, we have a definite answer to that question.

NHRA’s Announcement

The NHRA announced that it will be back to racing in July. Unlike NASCAR, they will have spectators in attendance but this attendance will be limited. The reopening will commence on July 11-12 at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis. There will then be another race at the same track on July 18-19. Admission will only be accessible by NHRA members and 2020 U.S. Nationals ticket holders.

According to NHRA President, Glen Cromwell, “Because we are an outdoor sport, we feel comfortable opening these Indianapolis events to a limited number of fans who are the lifeblood of our sport and following the guidance of the state of Indiana to resume racing.”

As of now, the schedule is set up for 17 more races. This will make 19 in total, considering the two that happened before the shutdown.

The revised schedule will go as follows:

July 18 -19 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing at Lucas Oil Raceway, Indianapolis

Aug. 7-9 Dodge Mile-High NHRA Nationals, Denver

Aug. 14-16 Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals, Brainerd, Minn.

Aug. 21-23 Menards NHRA Heartland Nationals, Topeka, Kan.

Aug. 28-30 NHRA Southern Nationals, Atlanta

Sept. 3-6 Denso Spark Plugs NHRA U.S. Nationals, Indianapolis

Sept. 11-13 Mopar Express Lane NHRA Nationals, Reading, Pa.
