Ride Along As Bobby Unser Conquers Pikes Peak In 1966
In today’s era of racing, we have some pretty amazing things going on. Not only is the format in which racing is presented changing on a regular basis as people are trying out all different forms of motoring but also the vehicles from which we race have vastly improved even over the past decade or so let alone all the improvements that have been made since the year of 1966. It’s pretty cool to see just how technology is playing a role in racing as a lot of smart people have invested their time and effort into making sure that cars keep on getting better and better.
However, no matter how advanced racing gets, there’s just something about the simplicity of an old school pass up Pike’s Peak that can’t be matched on the cool-meter. No matter how advanced your car or how badass of a driver you are, you are going to find it’s going to be a pretty big struggle to match the old-school cool of a driver who took it upon himself to rocket up the mountain all of those years ago. There’s no electronics, no assists, and the driver who seems to have a lot more courage than most. When you combine all of those things together, you get a video that is some must-see stuff.
If you follow along down in the video below, you’ll be able to see an amazing pass up Pike’s Peak that takes you into the past and gives a unique perspective that might just help to alter your thoughts on what racing is today.
We have to throw in the fact that it’s also pretty cool that they were able to film something like this. Today, it’s something that we take for granted as cameras like the GoPro are absolutely everywhere but back in that era, we would assume that it was probably a pretty complicated set up to be able to capture the action in this way.
