Seatbelt Pretensioner in Super Slow Motion, See How it Works

We are back again with more from the Slow Mo Guys, Gav and Dan. We have found yet another awesome video and wanted to share with you.

When I watched this clip for the first time, I actually learned something, as I didn’t know there were some vehicles with seat belts that are set to actually retract the buckle and pull you tighter into your seat in the event of a crash. This mechanism, built into the latch itself, uses either spring or a small explosive to pull the latch downward, helping reduce the distance your body travels upon impact.

Watching it at regular speed, it doesn’t look that interesting at all. However, recorded at 28,000 frames per second and played back at regular speed, you can see just what all is going on in this life-saving mechanism. From the small explosion to the retraction of the latch itself, everything happens so quickly, it takes the fastest of frame rates to break it down and see what all is going on.

I’m sure we will be back with more videos from the Slow Mo guys! I know I get caught up in their channel and watch this stuff for hours!
