The Center Isn’t in the Center – Ridiculous Offset Wheels Cause Pure Destruction

If you’re in search of the questions that you had never asked about automobiles, look no further than the Garage 54 YouTube channel. It really does seem like an obscure concept. After all, if you weren’t wondering about something then why would you be interested in learning more about it? Well, let’s just say that the channel has a way of approaching subjects that are so obscure that we can’t help but be curious.

This time, the subject of discussion is wheel design. Over the years, wheel design has taken many shapes and forms quite literally. On one hand, basic things like size are considered. For some applications, a smaller wheel will do the job better than something bigger. Furthermore, wheel designers look at things like material composition. This might help make a wheel either lighter or more durable. Perhaps a combination of both is what’s necessary.

This time, though, we take a look at wheel offset. It’s not the traditional wheel offset that you might be thinking about, either. Typically, this term is used to describe where the wheel face sits within the rim. It can be either pushed away from the center of the vehicle or away from it.

In this one, the offset in question has to do with something entirely different. This experiment addresses where the lug nut holes are. Instead of moving them toward or away from the face of the wheel, they are moved to the side. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that this could make a pretty lumpy ride and one that would probably eventually destroy a vehicle. However, we can’t help but loop back around to the question that we simply never asked.

By following along with the video below, we get to tune in as a poor car is put through the wringer. This thing is taking a beating out there but we would argue that it’s more than worth it!
