The Mighty J58 – The SR-71’s Secret Powerhouse
When it comes to machines that are efficient at making their way through the sky, the SR-71 was pretty much the poster child of its time for being a military aircraft that was both fast and incredibly efficient just about everything that it did.
While there still isn’t unlimited information out there on the technology that made the aircraft so great, bits and pieces come together to help you paint a bigger picture of exactly why it was held with such a high regard and how the plane went from 0 to Mach 3.2 without thinking twice.
This time, we check out the little contraption that is known as the “mighty J58,” an alternative to a thruster that is known as a “turbojet.” Basically, instead of short bursts of rust, the turbojet was designed to work better across a power band of sorts, simply put.
We continue to be mesmerized by not only the SR-71 and all of its assets but other military aircraft that are put into the skies and do amazing things. In the clip below, you might just learn a thing or two about what made this plane so great.
