Woman Killed When Truck Was Hit by Tree Was Wife, Mother and EMT

LAPEER COUNTY, MI – A 36-year-old Lapeer woman was killed last week when severe weather caused a tree branch to go through the windshield of the vehicle she was a passenger in was a wife, mother, and EMT, according to her obituary.

 Katelyn Furneaux was killed Wednesday, Aug. 3, when a tree near the roadway came down on the 2019 Dodge Ram truck she was a passenger in. A tree branch injured Furneaux, who was taken by Lapeer County EMS Ambulance Service to McLaren-Lapeer hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Also inside the vehicle with Furneaux were her 39-year-old husband and their 12-year-old son. Furneaux was the only person injured in the crash. Lapeer County was severely impacted by a thunderstorm at about 4 p.m. Wednesday, causing heavy rains, lightning, and winds.

Lapeer County Central Dispatch received a call of a personal injury crash at the intersection of Imlay City and Wilder roads in Lapeer Township at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Michigan State Police, Lapeer Township Police, and Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the scene. First responders found the Ram truck parked in a vacant lot at the intersection. The truck had damage to the windshield and roof regions.

 Authorities said the truck was westbound on Peppermill Road, near Force Road in Attica Township when a tree came down on the moving vehicle. The windshield broke and a branch entered the passenger seat area of the vehicle.
The crash remains under investigation.
According to Furneaux’s obituary, she was an EMT with Lapeer County EMS for 10 years. She also helped with the Metamora Township Fire Department and worked at one point at the Karmanos Cancer Institute.
