Zoian Racing 2JZ powered Camry World Record Pass 5.757 @ 246
The crown for the world’s quickest import drag car has changed hands. The Zoian Racing Camry, piloted by Jesus Melendes, just dropped the record to an astonishing 5.757 at 246 MPH at Orlando Speed World in Florida.
The Camry, powered by the ubiquitous Toyota 2JZ powerplant, was built by Rick Jones Race Cars for the Gasolina Urban Blends-sponsored team to take on the Import frontrunners, most notably the former record holding EKanoo team from Bahrain. Melendez was already one of only a handful of import drivers to claim a spot in the 5-second import club, but his previous best of 5.91 was a tenth and a half off the EKanoo record of 5.77.
However, the Wilbert Performance-tuned Toyota sent a message to the rest of the front runners in the perpetual record hunt: There’s a new kid on the block, and he’s here to play. The record pass, which took place in testing for the upcoming Sport Compact Finals, certainly sent a wake up call to the middle east. Can EKanoo and his team respond and re-take the record? Only time will tell!
