Recall: Your Ram Might Catch on Fire, Over 131,000

If you have a 2021 model year Ram HD pickup truck, you should be getting a letter in the mail at the beginning of December. A recent recall is bringing the trucks back into dealers because of engine bay fires.

The manufacturer has pinned down the fact that the fire is started by an issue with solid-state intake heater relays in Ram trucks fitted with the 6.7L Cummins engine. From what we’re told, this relay can suffer a short which then causes the fire to break out.

Originally, Ram was going to recall about 20,000 trucks. However, the recall has now spread to over 131,000 as the brand discovered that it wasn’t just the unprotected relays that were causing an issue. Instead, it seems as if protected relays will also be a problem as well.

Ram recommends parking your 2021 heavy-duty truck away from structures and other vehicles until the fire hazard can be sorted out. Perhaps, the worst part of the entire situation is that Fiat Chrysler reportedly can’t figure out exactly what it is that’s causing the short. They are said to have been working with the component manufacturers to pin down the root of the issue.

So far, 10 known fires have broken out that are believed to be linked to this issue. Fortunately, though, no accidents have resulted.

Down below, we provide the list of trucks that are believed to be impacted by the fire hazard. Letters will be sent out to owners on December 3. This is about the same time that dealerships will be informed of the recall as well.

• 2021-2022 Ram 2500 (DJ) pickups built between August 3, 2020, and October 8, 2021 (67,597 units)
• 2021-2022 Ram 3500 (D2) pickups built between August 5, 2020, and October 8, 2021 (39,324 units)
• 2021-2022 Ram 3500 Chassis Cabs (DD) built between August 12, 2020, and October 7, 2021 (7,317 units)
• 2021-2022 Ram 4500/5500 (DP) Chassis Cabs built between November 13, 2020, and October 8, 2021 (16,939 units)
