To the casual viewer, it might seem like drag racing is a simple formula no matter what format it’s in. It might just look like racers throw together a certain combination of parts, plug in a tune, and go.

On the contrary, anyone who has been around the block a couple of times knows that things are much more complicated than that. Sure, at its roots, that’s the basic formula. The problem is that getting to just the right combination of parts and the proper setup on a car is a lot easier said than done. It’s not exactly like one can just plug in a series of numbers and know for certain that everything is going to work. Instead, it takes tons of hours of researching and tweaking before the results begin to show.

This time, we get a unique behind-the-scenes look at just how complicated things might be, even for some of the most well-versed competitors.

As No Prep Kings is freshly in the rearview and Street Outlaws: Mega Cash Days  is quickly approaching, competitors are scrambling to switch up from one format to another. With NPK using big tire combinations and Mega Cash Days requiring an entirely different setup with small tire cars, being able to get things dialed in with these new combinations that are designed for an unfamiliar surface could be a challenge.

In fact, as our host this time, Kye Kelley Racing, tells us, some of the cars from team NOLA are in “left field.” In other words, these machines have a long way to go, so much so that the group decided to head out to a local drag strip to try and take one step in the right direction. Some might be thinking that a drag strip is probably not the best place to optimize your setup for the street. However, the hope is that seeing some familiar numbers on a time slip might be a good first step in the name of getting these cars all sorted out.
