North Carolina Circle Track Calls Race a “Protest,” Draws Massive Crowd

More than 2,000 spectators would make their way to Ace Speedway in Elon, North Carolina as the venue held a protest Saturday night.

Management posted a sign that said, “This event is held in Peaceful Protest of Injustice and Inequality Everywhere.” The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office responded to the situation, claiming that it’s “evaluating the events.”

As coronavirus restrictions limit gatherings to 25 in the area, it seems like drag racing fans are tired of the regulations. This is a part of the second phase of COVID-19 regulations which seem to be taking baby steps back to something that resembles normal life.

Reports say that the track did perform temperature checks before people entered the facility.

In a phone call with WFMY News 2, Alamance County Sheriff, Terry Johnson, seemed conflicted between what the difference would be between a gathering at a race track and the same amount of people marching down the street. The regulations in place, a misdemeanor, would typically come with a fine. However, it appears as if there will be further review.

Making that decision is certainly one that we wouldn’t want to be tasked with making. It seems like, as different situations evolve, the jobs of government officials get more difficult by the day in terms of making the right decision.

In this day and age, it seems like we move from one national crisis to the next. While many have shifted their attention to protesting the death of George Floyd, some seem to have thrown all COVID-19 precaution out the window. It’s hard to know what to expect next as this is certainly a situation unlike any that we have a precedent to serve as a roadmap. As the months roll on, it seems like 2020 is providing uncharted territory around every corner.

Hopefully, in the coming months, we can begin to mend the chaos that has been continuously brought to life.
