An Entire City is Suing Kia, Hyundai Because of Outrageous Number of Thefts

Some who have spent a period of time around video sharing platform, TikTok, may have seen a trend emerging that makes it popular to steal vehicles produced by both Kia and Hyundai.

These trends have shown young people stealing cars with nothing more than a screwdriver and a USB cable, a sequence that has been repeated over and over again.

Of course, parading the fact that you stole a car on social media is nothing short of moronic. However, it does expose quite a substantial underlying problem for these automotive manufacturers. From what we understand, cars are so easy to steal that they have become one of the largest targets of theft in specific areas.

In Madison City, Wisconsin, the cars have been so widely and easily stolen that leaders announced plans to file a federal lawsuit against these brands, claiming that they failed to install proper antitheft technology in their vehicles.

Madison’s mayor chimed in on the issue, citing that industry best security practices weren’t followed in the production of Kia and Hyundai vehicles. Because of the popularity of this trend and the ease of stealing these cars, thefts between these brands sprung up 270% in the summer of 2022 compared to 2021, creating quite a substantial jump.

For those who think that maybe more of the cars are getting stolen because crime is just getting worse in Madison alone, think again. Nearly half of all vehicle thefts in this area in July and August 2022 were comprised of both Kia and Hyundai vehicles.

At the end of the day, we are most certainly no security experts. However, we would think that if half of the vehicles stolen are produced by one particular manufacturer, maybe it’s something that this manufacturer should be looking into.

Stay tuned as the lawsuit is developing.
