The Lincoln Blackwood is the Ultimate Obscure Luxury Pickup You’ve Probably Never Heard Of
Over the years, let’s just say that some automakers have gotten incredibly bold with the models that they have decided to release. Now, this could be an effort that’s pretty easy to criticize in hindsight as some ended up flopping rather badly. However, we kind of have a special place in our hearts for models like these and we have to commend Lincoln for trying something new back in 2002 because in a world filled with boring cars, going off the wall is sometimes the only way to know if a new and crazy idea will stick or not.
One of those crazy ideas just so happens to be the Lincoln Blackwood.
The truck was kind of an obscure model that folks found a hard time finding a place in their garage for. Released in 2002, the truck only lasted for two years before it was eventually canceled. Our host this time, Doug DeMuro, says that the model that’s one of his favorites is relatively hard to find these days just because of how few of them were actually produced. Maybe the Blackwood will end up being a collectible one day. Who knows?
In any case, DeMuro seems rather passionate about the oddball of a truck that was designed to compete with a luxury sedan more so than a pickup truck. It was definitely a different way of thinking and one that didn’t catch on. Maybe some saw it as a failure because Lincoln didn’t know what they were doing but another way of looking at it is that it ultimately failed because it was ahead of its time. If something like this was launched in 2020, maybe it would’ve been a lot more successful.
What automakers didn’t know all the way back in 2002 was that about 20 years later, there would be a massive trend in high-end luxury pickup trucks that folks would end up spending over $100,000 for. Perhaps, the market just developed these tastes after the Blackwood. However, in any case, this time we take a look back as we get a guided tour of the Blackwood from DeMuro as he explains the thought process behind the truck and how it faded into obscurity.
