Mazda RX4 rotary turbo dyno & drag racing

For those of you who don’t know the Mazda RX-4, here is a quick lesson.  The Mazda RX-4 was sold in the US from 1974 – 1978.  The stock 13B rotary engine came with 110hp and 117 ft/lb of torque.  The track numbers were a 11.7 Second 0 – 60 and an 18 Second 1/4 mile at 77.5 mph.  At the time this put the RX-4 on Road & Track Ten Best list for “Best Sports Sedan” in 1975.  Today you can get better performance from even the cheapest model Kia.

This is NOT the case with this particular RX-4. Andrew’s Mazda RX4 is back on the dyno with a boost increase to 27 PSI. Tuned by Promaz Automotive power comes from a 13B bridge port rotary engine and boosted by a Garrett T66 turbocharger, a MicroTech EFI system and running C-16 fuel. This set up equates to a 623hp to the wheels.  A HUGE improvement over the 110hp at the flywheel from the factory.

Another huge improvement is shown at the race track the following night at Calder Park.  The RX-4 leaves the line at the dragstrip standing on the back 2 tires and puts a 10.07 second 1/4 mile pass @ 140.74 mph on the board.  8 seconds faster than the stock version and almost double the trap speed.
