These Autonomous Robots Are Getting Smart And Faster… We Are Doomed!
For years now, Boston Dynamics has been absolutely blowing our minds with their advances in autonomous robotics. While even their most rudimentary builds were the kinds of robots we expected to see in every home by the time we got to the year 2020, progress has been much slower than the general public had hoped. I think we can blame Hollywood for much of that, while the real world has to deal with the limitations of available technology.
While we still don’t have a target date for each of us having our own robotic assistants, it would certainly seem like the day is drawing visibly nearer thanks to the continued advancements by the Boston Dynamics teams. These guys have created a whole… herd? of robots that, depending on your perspective, are really cool or insanely scary.
I’m from the “these are cool” camp, as I can’t wait to have a canine-like companion that I don’t have to feed or clean up after. These autonomous robots certainly move with an eerily lifelike motion that makes it easy to understand the perspective of those who see them as scary. It’s a big unnerving to see a mechanism the size of a a medium sized dog that walks a lot like our canine companions.
Then there’s the noise, which I personally don’t mind as long as there is just one, but can you imagine how strange it would sound to hear 20 or 50 of these things whirring along at the same time, especially if they all got in sync and started marching. However, until I see a fleet of robot dogs headed my way, I’m not really worried about the uprising.
We would like to hear from both sides out there, so hit us up in the comments and let us know what you think. Would you welcome one of these things into your home? How much would you be willing to pay for one? Do you think the robots will become sentient and take over the world someday? We want to hear it all!
